Uncle Funk's Top 5 Disco Records

We caught up with everyone’s favourite Cambridge Club party-starters, Uncle Funk & The Boogie Wonderband, this week to quiz them on their top 5 Disco records of all time – and the results make quite the perfect playlist! Take it away, Simon…

1) Chic – Le Freak

The ultimate Disco song! ‘Le Freak’ always gets a cheer when we perform it – it just ignites the dance-floor. A US number 1 for seven weeks in 1979, and written about the iconic New York night club Studio 54, Le Freak is a timeless classic from the legendary Nile Rodgers & CHIC.

2) Earth, Wind & Fire – Boogie Wonderland

Earth, Wind & Fire are the undisputed kings of Disco. We feature three of their songs in our usual set, and they’re all band favourites! If we ever need to break any dance-floor ice, the trump card is ‘Earth, Wind & Fire’ – and this little slice of boogie magic in particular…

3) Heatwave – Boogie Nights

Written by Rod Temperton, Heatwave’s keyboard player (who also wrote Thriller for Michael Jackson), ‘Boogie Nights’ has a particularly funky bass-driven groove. We have our own dance-step for this song that we do with our audiences, so it’s always a great number to get people up and dancing!

4) Chaka Khan – I’m Every Woman

This classic record would make it onto many a Disco shortlist, but it holds particularly fond memories for us. One of the highlights of our career was having 5,000 burly bikers singing the chorus back to us at our headline slot at Silverstone’s MOTO GP event! An absolute staple of our live sets!

5) Sister Sledge – Lost In Music

We were thrilled to support the Queens of Disco, Sister Sledge, at the Cambridge Club Festival 2019 – and this is one of their top tracks. ‘Lost In Music’ was also written by Nile Rodgers. and has his signature groove stamped on it. It’s a huge Disco song that we love performing – but we left it out of our set just this once, so Sister Sledge could show us how it’s done!

Four sisters: Kim Sledge (born 21 August 1957), Debbie Sledge (born 9 July 1954), Joni Sledge (born 13 September 1956), and Kathy Sledge (born 6 January 1959...
